The club

Our history

From 18 runners at the Thorley Place Hotel in 1983 to more than 300 members today.

The club's first run, February 1983

Three founders, one party

The club was founded in 1983 by Brian Rider, Peter Hickman and Mary Poynter (now Amos). The three didn’t know each other beforehand — they met at a New Year’s Eve party.

  1. 1983

    The first run

On 20 February, 18 runners met at the Thorley Place Hotel for a Sunday morning run. The club hired the hotel’s upstairs lounge, where runners and often their families relaxed with a drink afterwards.

  2. 1983

74 members by the end of summer

Many traditions started in that first year, including the awards dinner and the Stortford 10 — now the Stort 10 and 5.

  3. 1984

    Green and gold

The club adopted its green and gold vests and started the Wednesday evening social run, which is still the heart of the club.

  4. 1989

    The Tony Pitman Trophy

First awarded in 1989, the year after his death.

  5. 2021

    The Christine Robinson Tinsel Run

Named after one of the club’s founding members.

  6. 2023

    Forty years

The club celebrated its 40th anniversary.

  7. Today

    More than 300 members

With triathlon, junior running and junior triathlon sections.
